Research for a documentary and film by Brayley's grandson Simon O'Gorman offers a fascinating insight of one of the most extraordinarily wealthy self made Welsh businessmen of the 20th century.
John Brayley MC DL, a Lieutenant in the Parachute Regiment, later Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery and Sir John Desmond Brayley, Lord of Cardiff and County Glamorgan and Army Minister, was born in 1917.
His childhood was spent growing up amongst the poverty of the Rhondda Valley in South Wales. In the summers as a young boy he would enjoy Scout Camps where he discovered his love of boxing. A ruthless streak developed, and from those early days to the end of his life, the gloves never came off.
Winning the military cross in the North African campaign with the parachute regiment (2 Para) in 1942 and mentioned in despatches in Sicily in 1943, Brayley battled his way to the forefront of British business and politics in the cities of Bristol and London. After a brief scandal hit career as minister for the army under Harold Wilson's government, he retired with great intentions for his younger family, but died suddenly in Cardiff in 1977.
